“Counting down the days till I can shave this itchy monstrosity off…….

…… BUT it’s worth it, if it helps save thousands of lives each year."

Like hundreds of men around the country, Paul Jackson Project Manager at K2 Consultancy, has put down his razer in support of The Prostate Project Charity OctoBeardFest 15.

The popular beard growing appeal hopes to raise £200,000 this year and reach a grand 3-year total of £1/4 million. Prostate cancer kills 11,000 men every year and the Prostate Project has been working hard for 17 years to reduce this figure.

The Prostate Project Charity are funding part of the development of a new Urology Centre at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.  K2 are providing Project and Cost Management services to the Royal Surrey for this project of which Paul has been involved with from the beginning

MP Jeremy Hunt cuts the turf for Royal Surrey’s new Urology Centre

MP Jeremy Hunt visited the Royal Surrey on Friday 2 October, to cut the turf and officially get building works underway for the Trust’s new state of the art Urology Centre.

Jeremy Hunt MP, John Setra MD K2 Consultancy and colleagues at the turf cutting ceremony

The new Urology Centre will be a superb example of NHS care at its finest, providing a world class service for local patients. It will allow the Trust to continue to provide the most up to date care anywhere in Europe, from diagnosis to treatment. The Centre will also allow many of the research breakthroughs achieved in Guildford to be delivered more quickly to our patients.

Urology treatment will be further supported with the construction of a new surgical theatre and the purchase of two new state of the art surgical robots. The new Centre is expected to provide diagnosis and treatment for up to 500 people in its first year and will act as a model of how centralised cancer care should be provided in the NHS.

The new Urology Centre has been designed to the highest levels of sustainability, having a BREEAM Excellent rating. It represents a total investment of £4m on behalf of Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust.

It will include:
  • 5 Consultation Rooms
  • 3 Diagnostic & Treatment Rooms with recovery areas
  • A state of the art Multi-Disciplinary Team room and lecture theatre
  • Research laboratory
And will be home to:
  • 15 Consultants & Doctors
  • 12 specialist nurses
  • 8 research staff
In addition to the Royal Surrey’s £4m, the Prostate Project has raised £1.3m toward equipping the centre. The Prostate Project (PP) is a registered charity established in 1998 by prostate cancer patient Colin Stokes and his consultant urological surgeon, Mr John Davies, Royal Surrey County Hospital. The ambition of the Prostate Project is to give men a better chance of beating prostate cancer.

Jeremy Hunt MP, MP South West Surrey spoke and said: “I’m delighted to officially cut the turf for the new urology centre. Once built, this facility will lead the way in providing diagnosis and advanced treatment for hundreds of people affected by cancer.

“It reinforces the great strides the Royal Surrey and the NHS as a whole is making in better cancer care, particularly early diagnosis making the hospital the pre-eminate regional and national cancer care facility.”

Professor Stephen Langley, Professor of Urology & Clinical Director at the Royal Surrey commented:

"The New Urology Centre will allow us to deliver first class care in a first class environment. It demonstrates the NHS at its finest, investing in superb facilities to match the level of care that we can provide to our local population. The Centre would not have been possible without the close collaboration between our charity, the Prostate Project, and the Royal Surrey.”

John Setra MD K2 Consultancy
K2 Consultancy will be managing the build of the new Centre. Paul Jackson, Project Manager said: “This is a challenging and exciting project that we are proud to be involved in. We’ve identified and liaised with all the key internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the design is developed to fully meet the Trusts needs whilst ensuring the best value.”

Dr Colin Stokes M.B.E. – Chairman Emeritus the Prostate Project comments:

''This will change forever how Urology patients are treated at the Royal Surrey. As a world class centre it will match the world class medical team''
